In 1805 the VICTORY was Captain Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, and under his command she engaged in combat with Admiral Villeneuve’s ships, the BUCENTAURE and the REDOUTABLE. This battle decided the fate of Napoleanic Europe. At one o’clock in the afternoon the BUCENTAURE sailed into the lee of the VICTORY and presented her stern. As she sailed slowly past, the VICTORY fired the 68 cannons on her fore deck knocking down everybody on deck and in the cabins of the BUCENTAURE and so rendered 300 crewmen unfit for battle. As there was no wind, the BUCENTAURE could not escape and received salvo after salvo from the VICTORY’s 50 port broadside. (Barrot de Gaissard “Marine de Guerre à voiles 1750 – 1850″). Scale:1:40 Length: 67 ins, Height 47 inches. It is a stark reminder of an unfortunate part of world history. The most significant routes of the slave ships led from the north-western and western coasts of Africa to South America and the south-east coast of what is today the United States, and the Caribbean. The transportation of slaves from Africa to America was known as the Middle Passage. The African slave trade was outlawed in 1807, by a law passed jointly in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. The applicable UK act was the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act and outlawed slavery throughout the British Empire. After that date, all US and English slave ships leaving Africa were legally pirate vessels subject to capture by the United States Navy or Royal Navy. In 1815, at the Council of Vienna, Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands also agreed to abolish their slave trade. Built in Seychelles by Master Craftsman of 40 Years Experience. Construction is Frame and plank with brass nails and aged rigging, as per original construction. This is a U. Mississippi ashtray and let me tell you, this one is cool! Constructed of solid brass or bronze and weighing in at over a full pound, this outstanding rare piece of World War 2 military history. A number of buyers at this sale were representing other military museums from outside the region and were there to acquire new additions to their displays so there was some fierce competition but I walked away with this ashtray and a number of other really great items. In fact, another piece that I acquired from this museum went on to find a new home in a Fifth Avenue gallery in Manhattan a couple years ago. Meanwhile, I kept this ashtray as a part of my personal collection because it’s easy to display due to it’s size and yet it’s loaded with the history of that great dreadnought; nonetheless, I’ve finally decided to part with it and pass it along to somebody with an even greater appreciation for it than I. These military ashtrays were manufactured aboard Naval vessels by Navy machinists during their downtime when not repairing damaged ships or embroiled in battle. They were requested by and custom made for this countries greatest Commanders during some of the world’s most historic events and used aboard Americas most famous battleships. They were displayed proudly and used on a daily basis by military Commanders and at the end of a command, these coveted artifacts were either taken home by the Commander or were gifted to loyal staff members where they often remained for decades. These are not to be confused with general, run-of-the-mill ceramic ashtrays available in Naval base and online gift shops as are commonly found today. These custom machined ashtrays are extremely rare. While most of these historic battleships are long gone, like the Mississippi which was retired and eventually scrapped in 1956, a piece of them lives on through artifacts such as these. You don’t have to just read about her, you can actually hold a piece that was made just for her and for those who guided her as they risked their lives while defending this great country. The display easel is not included and any additional pictures or items seen in pictures are for reference only and not part of the sale. The item “U. S. S. Mississippi WWII Battleship Brass/Bronze Ashtray Museum Piece! Uss navy” is in sale since Monday, January 13, 2020. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Militaria\Militaria (Date Unknown)\Navy”. The seller is “mypalrocco” and is located in Kingman, Arizona. This item can be shipped to United States.
