This is a U. Mississippi ashtray and let me tell you, this one is cool! Constructed of solid brass or bronze and weighing in at over a full pound, this outstanding rare piece of World War 2 military history. A number of buyers at this sale were representing other military museums from outside the region and were there to acquire new additions to their displays so there was some fierce competition but I walked away with this ashtray and a number of other really great items. In fact, another piece that I acquired from this museum went on to find a new home in a Fifth Avenue gallery in Manhattan a couple years ago. Meanwhile, I kept this ashtray as a part of my personal collection because it’s easy to display due to it’s size and yet it’s loaded with the history of that great dreadnought; nonetheless, I’ve finally decided to part with it and pass it along to somebody with an even greater appreciation for it than I. These military ashtrays were manufactured aboard Naval vessels by Navy machinists during their downtime when not repairing damaged ships or embroiled in battle. They were requested by and custom made for this countries greatest Commanders during some of the world’s most historic events and used aboard Americas most famous battleships. They were displayed proudly and used on a daily basis by military Commanders and at the end of a command, these coveted artifacts were either taken home by the Commander or were gifted to loyal staff members where they often remained for decades. These are not to be confused with general, run-of-the-mill ceramic ashtrays available in Naval base and online gift shops as are commonly found today. These custom machined ashtrays are extremely rare. While most of these historic battleships are long gone, like the Mississippi which was retired and eventually scrapped in 1956, a piece of them lives on through artifacts such as these. You don’t have to just read about her, you can actually hold a piece that was made just for her and for those who guided her as they risked their lives while defending this great country. The display easel is not included and any additional pictures or items seen in pictures are for reference only and not part of the sale. The item “U. S. S. Mississippi WWII Battleship Brass/Bronze Ashtray Museum Piece! Uss navy” is in sale since Monday, January 13, 2020. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Militaria\Militaria (Date Unknown)\Navy”. The seller is “mypalrocco” and is located in Kingman, Arizona. This item can be shipped to United States.

This is an factory original EB retirement desk display in Excellent Condition. In the pictures, any discoloration near the sail or planes is simply dust – it got dusty over the years. The paint on the sub is excellent with no problems. I didn’t photograph the whole brass presentation plate for privacy only – there is no damage. It’s 11-1/2″ wide, 3-1/2″ deep. On the bottom of the base (last pic) the line on the wood is not a scratch or crack – it’s a mark that looks like it was done in the making when the wood was handled at the factory. Actual Photographs brought back from WWI with a US sailor and found in his storage unit in Florida after his death. There are NO COPIES these are the only photos in existence 2 photos are 3×5 inches, 4 are 4×6 inches, one is 5×8. The Navy is chock full of myth and tradition, and what happens at sea even affects our language. Many naval traditions, from the Sirens and Sea Monsters of the Odyssey. To the boatswain’s call. Date back hundreds and even thousands of years. The Line Crossing Ceremony. Might just be the most interesting of today’s naval traditions. No one is really sure when or how the Line Crossing Ceremony, “Order of Neptune”. The ritual dates back at least 400 years in Western seafaring. The ceremony observes a mariner’s transformation from slimy Pollywog, a seaman who hasn’t crossed the equator, to trusty Shellback, also called a Son or Daughter of Neptune. It was a way for sailors to be tested for their seaworthiness. High ranking members of the crew and those who have been Shellbacks the longest dress up in elaborate costume and each play the part of King Neptune’s court. What proceeds is a day of festivities, which builds camaraderie among the seafaring crew. How to Perform a Line Crossing Ceremony. Goes something like this. Pollywogs entertain the royal court with a talent show. Dancing, song, skits or poetry count among the merriment. After the show, Pollywogs receive a subpoena from Davy Jones to stand before the court the next day and answer to charges brought against them by the Shellbacks. After breakfast, which is made too spicy for the Pollywogs to eat, the accused appear before King Neptune, who sits in judgment. They perform a variety of activities which might involve wearing their clothes inside out or backwards and crawling across the deck through objectionable debris, often the uneatable breakfast that was served to the Pollywogs. Next, the Pollywogs kneel before the King and kiss the royal baby’s belly, which according to some accounts is covered in grease. Lastly, the Pollywogs take a royal bath in a pool of sea water before being declared Shellbacks, after which they receive their certificates, which they can proudly hang on their wall at home. The Shellbacks plan the coming festivities, but they also spend the entire month taunting the Pollywogs until a mock mutiny is staged by them on the day before the Equator crossing Pollywog Day. Notable Line Crossing Ceremonies. On the open sea, even the leader of a great nation must answer to King Neptune. In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, too, received a summons. To appear before the sea god and pay his respects. The charges brought against him. Disregard of the traditions of the sea. Taking liberties with the piscatorial subjects of His Majesty Neptunus Rex. In 2010, a Line Crossing Ceremony was an international affair. Sailors and Marines from the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Peru and Uruguay crossed the equator together aboard the USS New Orleans. “We have the same sort of ceremony in my country, ” said. Juan Pablo Rosato of the Argentine navy. It is interesting to see how similar our maritime cultures are to one another. I think that being able to participate in the rite of passage with another friendly navy is always an honor and it allows us to know each other better. These were used on various Navy ships throughout the war. This SPECIFIC item (along with other items I have listed) was saved from the Admiral Hipper Class Cruiser “Prinz Eugen” by Commander William F. Handley, shortly before her demise in 1946. Handley served as the Chief Engineer on the Prinz Eugen for the duration of her US Service, up until she was scrapped. Prinz Eugen was an Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser, laid down in April 1936, launched in August 1938, and entered service after the outbreak of war, in August 1940. She was armed with a main battery of eight 20.3 cm guns and displaced over 16,000 long tons. Along with the Bismarck, she saw action during Operation in May 1941. The two ships destroyed the British battlecruiser Hood and moderately damaged the battleship Prince of Wales in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. In February 1942, Prinz Eugen was deployed to Norway, although her time stationed there was curtailed when she was torpedoed by the British submarine Trident days after arriving in Norwegian waters. After the German collapse in May 1945, she was surrendered to the British Royal Navy before being transferred to the US Navy as a war prize. The cruiser was commissioned into the US Navy as the unclassified miscellaneous vessel USS Prinz Eugen with the hull number IX-300. Having survived the atomic blasts, Prinz Eugen was towed to Kwajalein Atoll, where she ultimately capsized and sank in December 1946. The wreck remains partially visible above the water approximately two miles northwest of Bucholz Army Airfield, on the edge of Enubuj. One of her screw propellers was salvaged and is on display at the Laboe Naval Memorial in Germany. Made of a what appears to be a painted brass. This Signal Horn is a VERY NICE example! Originating from the “Prinz Eugen”, Handley’s Estate indicate this as being a “Mess Hall Horn”… However I do not think that is correct. It appears to be a signaling horn. T here is some slight wear, marks, and dents due to the age, but nothing that detracts. Features a nice KM Adler Inspection stamp on the top. Please note that the Photos, Documents, ID’s etc. An EXTREMELY RARE piece of history, it would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection or display! Please note that I have NUMEROUS items from the Prinz Eugen, all which were removed by Commander William F. TERMS OF SALE.
