RARE 1940 USS Trout (Lost Boat) Commissioning Model fr Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
Antique, Collectibles & Bric-A-Brac. This is a circa 1940 submarine commissioning model for the USS Trout (SS-202) in perfect condition with deck gun intact and periscope also intact. Launched May 21, 1940, the Trout was lost on her 11th and final war patrol, having sunk 23 enemy ships during her first ten patrols. In February 1944, Trout fueled up at Midway and headed via a great circle route toward the East China Sea: she was never heard from again. Japanese records indicate that one of their convoys was attacked on 29 February, in the patrol area assigned to Trout. Possibly one of the convoy’s escorts sank the submarine. On 17 April, Trout was declared presumed lost. Trout received 11 battle stars for World War II service and the Presidential Unit Citation for her second, third, and fifth patrols. Japanese records examined after the war showed that destroyer Asashimo, presumably an escort in the convoy of Sakito Maru, detected a submarine and dropped 19 depth charges. Oil and debris came to the surface and the destroyer dropped a final depth charge on that spot. Trout went down with all 81 hands. SIZE: Approximately 2-3/16″ in height, 7-1/8″ in length and 1-7/8 in diameter. MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Nickel-plated brass with painted lettering. ATTACHMENT: Model screwed into base. CONDITION: 9+ (Very Fine+): The model has some light wear only, with deck gun intact and periscope intact. Rare Antique 1892 WHITE SQUADRON U. S. CRUISER NEW YORK Puzzle Mcloughlin Scarce
For your consideration is this super rare puzzle of the U. S Cruiser New York published by McLoughlin Brothers Publishing in 1892. This 128 year old picture puzzle is so rare I cant find reference to any other examples remaining. This possibly could be the last one! The puzzle is complete and original and in superb condition with all 40 chromolithograph picture pieces made of a hard pressboard material. This beautiful and highly detailed scarce puzzle of the U. Cruiser NEW YORK measures 22 x 10.5 inches when assembled. The armored-cruiser, USS New York was launched on December 2, 1891 and was the first armored cruiser to enter Navy service. She was 186 feet long and had a fast cruising speed of 20 knots powered by four triple-expansion engines putting out a combined 16,000 horsepower. This beautiful and scarce puzzle depicts her at full speed with all her armament and glory on display. Her initial assignments were with the South Atlantic Squadron, in the West Indies, and the North Atlantic Squadron. In 1895, New York represented the United States during the opening of the Kiel Canal in Germany. Rejoining the North Atlantic Squadron, she served as the flagship of the squadron and led the warships against the Spanish Navy in the Battle of Santiago on July 3, 1898, during the Spanish-American War. Following the war, New York was assigned off Latin America, in Asiatic waters, in the eastern Pacific, in the Atlantic, and off Europe. In February 1911, she was renamed Saratoga and was subsequently renamed Rochester in December 1917. During World War I, Rochester patrolled and protected Allied convoy ships in the Atlantic. Following the war, she guided the Trans-Atlantic flight of the NC aircraft in May 1919. In July 1920, she was redesignated CA-2. During her time in the Caribbean area, she assisted numerous countries such as Haiti and Nicaragua until April 1932 when she became the flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. Serving for only a year, Rochester was decommissioned and laid up at Olongapo, Philippines, until scuttled in December 1941 to avoid capture by the Japanese. The box of the puzzle displays the same image of the puzzle when complete and the box measures approximately 12.75 x 9.5 x 1.75 inches. The box shows wear commensurate with prior light soiling to the top and still displays wonderfully. The bottom box sides are paper covered wood and the box top and bottom of the box are thick cardboard. On the bottom left corner of the box top it reads copyrighted 1892 and the bottom right reads McLoughlin Bros New York. Please see all pictures as they are part of the description and feel free to ask if you have any additional questions. The item “Rare Antique 1892 WHITE SQUADRON U. S. CRUISER NEW YORK Puzzle Mcloughlin Scarce” is in sale since Sunday, November 1, 2020. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Transportation\Boats & Ships\Military\Other Naval Collectibles”.
