Soon after her commissioning, Texas saw action in Mexican waters following the “Tampico Incident” and made numerous sorties into the North Sea during World War I. When the United States formally entered World War II in 1941, Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic, and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Among the world’s remaining battleships, Texas is notable for being the only remaining dreadnought battleship, though she is not the oldest surviving battleship; Mikasa, a pre-dreadnought battleship ordered in 1898, is older than Texas. Jones of the USS Texas in the Spanish American War. A man of the cloth at an early age he eventually wound up in the US Navy. Below is a list of items in the archive and photos. This collection is musueum quality and certainly should be with an institution concerning the US Navy, USS Texas and the Spanish American War. If you see this listing and know someone who would consider this for their collection please let them know. The scrapbook alone is a book waiting to be written. Below are more detailed photos. Marriage certificate printed on board 14 1/2 x 20 inches. Jones and Miss Anna F. Lind both of New York City. Dated Feb 24, 1892. Edward Knapps wrote the document and signed it with two witnesses. We have his original commission dated 7 June 1896. For Chaplin in the Navy. This beautiful parchment piece has all the seals and signatures that make it quite desirable on its own. Signed by the Secretary of the Navy Hilary A. Herbert and the President of the United States of America. Both strong signatures and in EX condition. He put them in a beautiful album that is leather and stamped on the cover To My Little Son (7) Charles Harry Jones from his Father, Harry W. Jones, Chaplin Battleship “Texas” U. The album has 118 pages chock full of clippings. Over 400 clippings, plus some loose. 95% of the clippings are dated and list the periodical they came from. Each is neatly pasted on pages. There are also a few regarding other Chaplins in the service. The bound book has broken away from the front cover. Easily repaired by a book binder. The lot contains 4 of his medals; A. United States Navy for Service / Spanish Campaign 1898. Numbered on edge 4978. Military Order of Foreign Wars medal. Ribbon and Medal in EX condition. Spanish American War Veterans Medal. Beaufitul enameling, ribbon slightly soiled, eagle and blue bar at top EX condition. This wonderful piece is engraved on the reverse. Honorary Chaplin of Naval Command No. Last but not least the famed Sampson Medal issued to Chaplin Harry W. The ribbon is frayed and currently in 3 pieces. The Sampson medal is enscribed on the edge Chaplin Harry William Jones. Contains 7 bars for service and the top bar is U. Going down the ribbon we have Santiago June 1, Guantanamo June 12, Guantanamo June 15, The next 4 are all Santiago, June 16, June 22, July 2, July 4th. These next few items are from other US Navy men who corresponded with Jones. Each was in his estate with cards from the sender. Business card for Otto A. Has eagle, flag, cannon and Admiral Dewey’s image on the left and a drawn image of the USS Maine on the right. Paul Minnesota and geneology will show he was a Minnesota Volunteer. With his card were two items. Small disc with loop on top 13/16th inch diameter. On one side and engraved on the other From the wreck of the U. Battleship Maine Havana Harbor Cuba. This next piece is a relic. Has typed strip that was displayed with the card. A peace (sic) of the Battleship Maine. The long thin piece is 3 3/4 inches x 3/4 inch and the other piece is 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches. Last of these and certainly not least is a piece of cable sent to Jones by Emil Johnson of the USN. He hailed from Elk City Oklahoma. Mailed to Jones after the war ended. On the back of his business card with is faded is the following statement. Kindly accept with best wishes piece of cable which was attached to contact mine which the USS Texas hit in Guantanamo Bay Cuba June 29, 1896. This is an importent relic from the archive from the USS Texas. Small string bound book with white cardboard covers. Half the pages are loose. THE TEXAS, A Southern Built Battleship. Compliments of the Texas House. Makers of fine silver. Tells of the gift on the occassion of the first visit to this port by the Battleship Texas. The port was Galveston. Book authored by Chaplin Harry W. Battle of Santiago, the Annihilation of Cervera’s Fleet. 40 page booklet in VG condition. Small strip of foxing on cover. Magic Lantern slide of the USS TEXAS. Lot of photos; A. 7 albumen photos on board 4 1/4 inch square. Three cabinet photos of Chaplin Jones in uniform post war. 4 1/2 x 6 1/2. Students await his arrival at Burrnell Unv for lecture by Jones. Christmas 1916 Jones in hat and fur lined coat. 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Small passport photo of Jones. A stamped postcard with image on front of Jones with 2 medals, giving Christmas greetings 1916, Peoples Church Valley Stream NY. Large cabinet photo 10 x 12 with image of era sailors at cannon. Drawn image photo by R. Large mounted photo 8 x 10 with Jones in 1902. A post war photo of Jones in his Salvation Army Uniform and wearing his medals. Note one is the Sampson Medal with 7 bars. We do not know the whereabouts of this medal. Taken by Maurer in Galveston Texas prior to his services post WWI and gatherings amoungst troops and large groups. Also attended and took reports at the Treaty of Versaille. A photo of Jone’s son Charles W. Jones at age of 7 taken in 1903. In a silver frame. Two photos we believe of the same person one in high boots and other with monocal. These two were in the archive and I believe they could be his son post WWI and prior to WWII. During WWII Charles H. Jones recieved the Distinguished Service Medal. Lot of 6 letter heads from Harry W. Jones post Spanish American War. USS TEXAS letterhead from when Jones wrote a book The Battle of Santiago. The book is in this collection. Page from the Freeport NY Lodge of Elks and past Chaplin NY Elks Assoc. Chancellor Commander of Knights of Pythias letterhead. The Pythian Herald Dr. Jones editor in Chief. Then two from The Jones Storage Battery Co. Also (not shown) Commrades in Service from March 14th 1919 Dinner program. With Jone’s name as Field Advisor. Also a book by Jones 1912. That’s about it. A very strong archive that needs care and attention for the future. After his death all items in this archive were gathered togther by his wife and give to a dear friend of ours who shared it with me as early as 2002. This friend died last year and passed the items on to us including the Sampson Medal which was not found or seen back in 2002. Flag our site if you would.
