WWII US Navy Torpedo Boat PT-109 John F Kennedy 24 Wooden Model Ship Assembled
This handcrafted ELCO PT-109 Torpedo Boat model, in 1/40 scale, is painstakingly built by our skilled craftsmen with a wealth of detail. The PT-109 was a PT boat (Patrol Torpedo Boat) last commanded by Lieutenant, junior grade (LTJG) John F. Kennedy (later President of the United States) in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Kennedy’s actions to save his surviving crew after the sinking of the PT-109 made him a war hero, which proved helpful in his political career. The only completely restored Elco PT-boat in existence, PT 617, is on display at the Battleship Cove Museum in Fall River, Massachusetts. Decorated as the PT-109, PT 796 was used as a float in John F. Kennedy’s inaugural parade. The PT-109 boat was commanded by the 35th United States President John F. Kennedy, an Elco PT-103 class torpedo boat. During World War II, The Elco boats were the largest PT boats operated by the United States Navy. At 80 feet (24 m) and 40 tons, they had strong wooden hulls of 2-inch (5 cm) mahogany planking. Powered by three 12-cylinder 1,500hp (1100 kW) Packard gasoline engines (one per propeller shaft), their designed top speed was 41 knots (76 km/h). For space and weight-distribution reasons, the center engine was mounted with the output end facing forward, with power transmitted to the propeller shaft through a V-drive gearbox. Because the center propeller was deeper, it left less of awake and was preferred by skippers for low-wake loitering. The engines were fitted with mufflers in the stern to direct the exhaust under water, which had to be bypassed for high speed. These were used not only to mask their own noise from the enemy but to be able to hear enemy aircraft, which were rarely detected overhead before dropping their bombs. Length is 24″, beam is 7″, and height is 8 3/4. Condition: New (fully assembled). Ready to display, not from any sort of kit. Made of finest exotic tropical wood. Hundreds of hours were required to finish this model sailboat by skillful craftsmen and artisans. Individual wooden planks used in hull construction using plank on bulkhead method. Highly complex rigging with varied thread gauge, hundreds of blocks and deadeyes. Figurehead, cannons, anchors, bell, propeller and other fitting made from metal and/or brass. Solid wood base and brass nameplate included. Professional 100% secure packing. Missing and loose parts are not considered damaged or defected. We will send you extra parts with instruction. The actual items colors may vary from colors shown on your monitor. Listing pictures were taken from prototypes. Item(s) in stock might slightly different from the listing pictures. The German Army and Navy used a wide variety of optical equipment, including a 6×30 (6 power magnification with 30mm objective lens), 7×50, 8×30, 10×50 and others, being the standard issued optics used by all branches of service. Though this type was the standard, specialized personnel required stinger optics, and were issues to personnel on a limited basis. The Naval Shipyard Wilhelmshaven (KMW – Kriegsmarine Werft Wilhelmshaben) was the most important naval shipyard during WW2. It was originally the Imperiual Shipyard Wilhelmshaven thoughout WW1, and then was changed to the Reichsmarinewerft in 1935. In late 1939, it went into possession of the German Kriegsmarine, and was primarily used for the repair, conversion, and maintenance of warships and submarines. New buildings were usually only accepted as “filling orders” in order to maintain the high level of personnel, knowledge, and machinery. Made of aluminum, brass, and steel by Syb & Stys Fab Prazier Messinstrumente, Czechoslovakia, these 7 x 50 power binoculars are in EXCELLENT used condition! The lens bodies retain about 95% of the original black finish, and the aluminum end piece fittings are 100% intact! The focus adjustments still function perfectly on both eye pieces and the optics are still VERY clear, with NO fogginess or spotting! Used by FlaK crews at the Wilhelmshaven Shipyard, the left side is body marked. Note that the “N” indicates North Sea Fleet. The left side is marked, ” Dienstglas 7×50, bmk “. And the serial number, 153060. The RARE feature is that both eye pieces feature the sought-after “flip-up” eye sockets! Due to the overall condition of the binoculars, I believe these were prefessionally cleaned and re-painted… Overall a VERY NICE example, it would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display!! TERMS OF SALE. Most of my items are vintage, and as such are AS-IS, so you must therefore expect a degree of wear due to age and/or usage. ABOUT ME. Although my passion is the Me109, I do offer many other German Aircraft Fw190, Me262, etc. , as well as USAF and Japanese items. Occasionally I do offer many non-vintage items such as prints and art relating to the time period. Use is solely based on my authorization only.
