Was a warship in the. She was placed at the disposal of. On 4 February 1779, by King. Louis XVI of France. As a result of a loan to the United States. On 23 September 1779, the squadron, led by John Paul Jones, encountered the Baltic Fleet of 41 sail under convoy of HMS Serapis. Bonhomme Richard and Serapis entered a bitter engagement at about 6:00 p. The battle continued for the next four hours, costing the lives of nearly half of the American and British crews. British victory seemed inevitable, as the more heavily armed Serapis used its firepower to rake Bonhomme Richard with devastating effect. The commander of Serapis finally called on Jones to surrender. He replied, Sir, I have not yet begun to fight! Jones eventually managed to lash the ships together, nullifying his opponent’s greater maneuverability and allowing him to take advantage of the larger size and considerably more numerous crew of Bonhomme Richard. An attempt by the Americans to board Serapis was repulsed, as was an attempt by the British to board Bonhomme Richard. Finally, after another of Jones’s ships joined the fight, the British captain was forced to surrender at about 10:30 p. Bonhomme Richard shattered, on fire, leaking badly defied all efforts to save her and sank about 36 hours later at 11:00 a. On 25 September 1779. Jones sailed the captured Serapis to the Dutch United Provinces. Though Bonhomme Richard sank after the battle, the battle’s outcome was one of the factors that convinced the French crown to back the colonies in their fight to become independent of British authority. The model is in good condition, no breaks, chips or cracks. There are some scratches along the base. The piece needs a thorough gentle cleaning. Scratch Built 1/98 Model USS Constitution “Old Ironsides”. Exposed Gun, Berthing and Orlop Desks including stern gallery. Exposed decks lit with LED lighting for excellent display of details. Deluxe Case with Stand including light switch and programmable timer included. Model built primarily from Mantua Model plans and layout details from the USS Constitution Museum Website. Deck layouts follow closely the 1927 remodel plans. The 1927 plans were used to restore Constitution as she sits in Boston Harbor today. Main gallery details from 1927 plans and visible with lighting. Hammocks and even a prepared cartridge are visible under lighting. Anchor cable actually weaves to front of berthing deck as per plans. Bow and stern decorations done by hand with careful reproduction. Keel and frames made from 3/8 inch thick cherry wood. Double plank construction with basswood inner planks and mahogany outer planking. Planks stained and not painted to show the gorgeous color of the wood. Cooper hull with red details as she sits today. All wooden parts including gun carriages, hull decor, masts and spars, fighting tops, mast caps, furniture (except chairs) and gunports are hand made from scratch. Keel and frame from scratch. Base is a unique Live Edge quilted maple slab. Base itself is beautiful and unique. Many more photos available. Happy to answer questions about construction.
