The contract to build her was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Newport News, Virginia, on 26 November 1984, and construction began on 29 August 1986. She was launched on 3 July 1989 sponsored by Mrs. Sarah McDade, and commissioned on 26 January 1991, with Commander J. Scranton was the first submarine at Newport News to be built via “modular construction”. No keel was laid. Most of the internal structure, machinery, and piping were loaded in via open ends of the hull sections as each hull section was built out. The individual hull sections were later assembled with exact precision such that piping running between the sections was joined as the hull sections were welded together. Her keel was laid down on 15 August 1961 by General Dynamics Electric Boat of Groton, Connecticut. Because she was still early in the construction process, Greenling was one of three selected Thresher-class submarines selected for conversion to the improved Thresher class. The other two were SSN-613 Flasher and SSN-615 Gato. She was launched on 4 April 1964 sponsored by Mrs. On 29 April, she was towed to Quincy, Massachusetts, for lengthening and submarine safety program (SUBSAFE) modifications. Modifications included increased buoyancy and adding 13 feet 9 inches of length to the hull, providing improved living and working conditions for the crew and space for additional equipment. Greenling was commissioned on 3 November 1967. Service history On 27 May 1968, Greenling’s fleet training exercise was interrupted by the search and rescue operation for missing submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589). Her commanding officer was designated the Commander of the SAR Task Element, which included of three nuclear and four diesel submarines. That assignment continued until 12 June 1968. Greenling spent most of her career assigned to Submarine Squadron 10 (SUBRON 10) and was homeported in Groton, Connecticut. [citation needed] On 27 March 1973, Greenling accidentally dived “well below its test depth” during a training dive off the coast of Bermuda due to a faulty depth gauge. Various reports placed Greenling between 150 and 200 feet from crush depth at her deepest point. Equipment from Greenling’s control room was salvaged and used to construct a simulation of a submarine control room as an exhibit at the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Washington. Construction history The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut on 9 June 1960 and her keel was laid down on 14 April 1961. Originally laid down as the eleventh submarine in the Thresher-class building program, Flasher was extensively modified during the construction period. These modifications consisted of lengthening the hull, lengthening the sail, and upgrading the watertight integrity of the sea water systems. The SUBSAFE Program was developed as a result of the loss of USS Thresher, the first submarine of the class; Flasher became the first submarine certified as SUBSAFE. This contributed to the lengthy delay between being laid down and commissioning. In the nation’s only simultaneous twin launching Flasher and USS Tecumseh were launched on 22 June 1963. Flasher was sponsored and christened by Mrs. Wife of the Under Secretary of the Navy. Vice Admiral Elton W. Grenfell, then Commander Submarine Force, U. Atlantic Fleet (ComSubLant), delivered the principal address. She was commissioned on 22 July 1966, with Commander Kenneth M.
