Each piece is carved from wood and handpainted to provide a piece you’ll love. Length – 20 inches Made from Mahogany US Veteran Owned Business USS Columbus (SSN-762) is a Los Angeles-class nuclear powered fast attack submarine and the second vessel of the United States Navy to be named for Columbus, Ohio. The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut, on 21 March 1986 and her keel was laid down on 9 January 1991. She was launched on 1 August 1992 sponsored by Mrs. Margaret DeMars, wife of Admiral Bruce DeMars and commissioned on 24 July 1993. Operational history Columbus completed a Post Shipyard Availability in June 1994 in Groton, Connecticut after initial construction and shakedown operations. Pacific Fleet Submarine Force. Columbus deployed to the Western Pacific in late 1995 through early 1996 and conducted a variety of operations as a unit of the Seventh Fleet along the way making port visits in Hong Kong, Subic Bay, Guam, and Yokosuka, Japan. [2] Columbus was the first submarine equipped with the BYG-1 Fire Control System in December 2002. [3] Two successful test launches of Tactical Tomahawk (Block IV) cruise missiles were conducted in late May 2003 from Columbus, while underway in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California. [4] Columbus departed Pearl Harbor for another western Pacific deployment in late 2003, [5] and visited Jinhae-gu, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan while taking part in Annual-Ex 2003, an exercise with various units of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. [6] In mid-April 2006 seven Columbus crewmen were charged with a variety of offenses, including assault, dereliction of duty, and hazing, for alleged attacks on two of their shipmates. The accused range from a petty officer third class (E-4) to a senior chief (E-8). [7] A complete report on the situation was completed on 30 May. On 13 June, the Navy announced the dismissal of Columbus’s commanding officer, Commander Charles Marquez because of concerns about his “ability to establish and maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct, provide the crew a safe, positive, professional environment in which to work, and maintain good order and discipline”. [8][9] Captain Brian McIlvaine, former commanding officer of USS Ohio (SSGN-726), replaced Marquez temporarily. After a few months in command CAPT McIlvaine was replaced with CDR James Doody. At the end of a DMP (depot modernization period) In Bremerton, Washington, Columbus relocated back to Pearl Harbor on 22 December 2006. She departed in March 2008 for a regularly scheduled six-month deployment with the Seventh Fleet. Columbus supported national taskings and theater security cooperation efforts while making port visits in Saipan, Guam, Okinawa, Sasebo, and Yokosuka, Japan. [10] In January 2009 Columbus was awarded the Submarine Squadron Seven Battle Efficiency (Battle “E”) award, given to the submarine crew that best demonstrates technical proficiency and continual mission readiness throughout the previous year. In July 2009 Admiral Gary Roughead, the Chief of Naval Operations, announced that Columbus was the Pacific Fleet winner of the 2008 Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy. [13] Columbus arrived in the South Korean southern port city of Busan on 3 March 2014 as a part of a scheduled deployment in the Western Pacific. Columbus also enjoyed four port visits, including Singapore and Guam. USS Columbus SSN-762 (Black Hull) Submarine Model. Each piece is carved from wood and handpainted to provide a piece you’ll love. Length – 20 inches Made from Mahogany US Veteran Owned Business USS Greenling (SSN-614) was a Permit-class submarine. Her keel was laid down on 15 August 1961 by General Dynamics Electric Boat of Groton, Connecticut. Because she was still early in the construction process, Greenling was one of three selected Thresher-class submarines selected for conversion to the improved Thresher class. The other two were SSN-613 Flasher and SSN-615 Gato. She was launched on 4 April 1964 sponsored by Mrs. On 29 April, she was towed to Quincy, Massachusetts, for lengthening and submarine safety program (SUBSAFE) modifications. Modifications included increased buoyancy and adding 13 feet 9 inches of length to the hull, providing improved living and working conditions for the crew and space for additional equipment. Greenling was commissioned on 3 November 1967. Service history On 27 May 1968, Greenling’s fleet training exercise was interrupted by the search and rescue operation for missing submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589). Her commanding officer was designated the Commander of the SAR Task Element, which included of three nuclear and four diesel submarines. That assignment continued until 12 June 1968. Greenling spent most of her career assigned to Submarine Squadron 10 (SUBRON 10) and was homeported in Groton, Connecticut. [citation needed] On 27 March 1973, Greenling accidentally dived “well below its test depth” during a training dive off the coast of Bermuda due to a faulty depth gauge. Various reports placed Greenling between 150 and 200 feet from crush depth at her deepest point. Equipment from Greenling’s control room was salvaged and used to construct a simulation of a submarine control room as an exhibit at the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Washington. Construction history The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut on 9 June 1960 and her keel was laid down on 14 April 1961. Originally laid down as the eleventh submarine in the Thresher-class building program, Flasher was extensively modified during the construction period. These modifications consisted of lengthening the hull, lengthening the sail, and upgrading the watertight integrity of the sea water systems. The SUBSAFE Program was developed as a result of the loss of USS Thresher, the first submarine of the class; Flasher became the first submarine certified as SUBSAFE. This contributed to the lengthy delay between being laid down and commissioning. In the nation’s only simultaneous twin launching Flasher and USS Tecumseh were launched on 22 June 1963. Flasher was sponsored and christened by Mrs. Wife of the Under Secretary of the Navy. Vice Admiral Elton W. Grenfell, then Commander Submarine Force, U. Atlantic Fleet (ComSubLant), delivered the principal address. She was commissioned on 22 July 1966, with Commander Kenneth M. The principal speaker at the commissioning was US Representative George W. Grider of Tennessee, who had commanded Flasher (SS-249) during World War II. USS Flasher SSN-613 Submarine Model.
