Each piece is carved from wood and handpainted to provide a piece you’ll love. Length – 20 inches Made from Mahogany US Veteran Owned Business USS Columbus (SSN-762) is a Los Angeles-class nuclear powered fast attack submarine and the second vessel of the United States Navy to be named for Columbus, Ohio. The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut, on 21 March 1986 and her keel was laid down on 9 January 1991. She was launched on 1 August 1992 sponsored by Mrs. Margaret DeMars, wife of Admiral Bruce DeMars and commissioned on 24 July 1993. Operational history Columbus completed a Post Shipyard Availability in June 1994 in Groton, Connecticut after initial construction and shakedown operations. Pacific Fleet Submarine Force. Columbus deployed to the Western Pacific in late 1995 through early 1996 and conducted a variety of operations as a unit of the Seventh Fleet along the way making port visits in Hong Kong, Subic Bay, Guam, and Yokosuka, Japan. [2] Columbus was the first submarine equipped with the BYG-1 Fire Control System in December 2002. [3] Two successful test launches of Tactical Tomahawk (Block IV) cruise missiles were conducted in late May 2003 from Columbus, while underway in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California. [4] Columbus departed Pearl Harbor for another western Pacific deployment in late 2003, [5] and visited Jinhae-gu, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan while taking part in Annual-Ex 2003, an exercise with various units of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. [6] In mid-April 2006 seven Columbus crewmen were charged with a variety of offenses, including assault, dereliction of duty, and hazing, for alleged attacks on two of their shipmates. The accused range from a petty officer third class (E-4) to a senior chief (E-8). [7] A complete report on the situation was completed on 30 May. On 13 June, the Navy announced the dismissal of Columbus’s commanding officer, Commander Charles Marquez because of concerns about his “ability to establish and maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct, provide the crew a safe, positive, professional environment in which to work, and maintain good order and discipline”. [8][9] Captain Brian McIlvaine, former commanding officer of USS Ohio (SSGN-726), replaced Marquez temporarily. After a few months in command CAPT McIlvaine was replaced with CDR James Doody. At the end of a DMP (depot modernization period) In Bremerton, Washington, Columbus relocated back to Pearl Harbor on 22 December 2006. She departed in March 2008 for a regularly scheduled six-month deployment with the Seventh Fleet. Columbus supported national taskings and theater security cooperation efforts while making port visits in Saipan, Guam, Okinawa, Sasebo, and Yokosuka, Japan. [10] In January 2009 Columbus was awarded the Submarine Squadron Seven Battle Efficiency (Battle “E”) award, given to the submarine crew that best demonstrates technical proficiency and continual mission readiness throughout the previous year. In July 2009 Admiral Gary Roughead, the Chief of Naval Operations, announced that Columbus was the Pacific Fleet winner of the 2008 Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy. [13] Columbus arrived in the South Korean southern port city of Busan on 3 March 2014 as a part of a scheduled deployment in the Western Pacific. Columbus also enjoyed four port visits, including Singapore and Guam. USS Columbus SSN-762 (Black Hull) Submarine Model. I HAVE OTHER LOTS OF VINTAGE/ANTIQUE PHOTOS. THESE, AND THE OTHER LOTS LISTED, ALL CAME FROM AN ESTATE IN MISSOURI. THERE ARE LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF PHOTOS. I’M PUTTING THEM IN LOTS OF SIMILAR AGE/TYPE. Thank you and enjoy browsing my store! Here is a RARE photograph! This is a photo of 6 crew members of the USS ESSEX. The photo is marked on the front: SAWYERS 159 N. 8th St Philadelphia, PA. According to the writing on the back, the man standing on the right is the “Humble Servant” owner. The others were his friends and crew mates. It also appears there are 2 brothers (the last name is the same: Nyhan). These early photos are tough to find and even harder to find with them identified!! There is some wear on the corners of the back board, but the photo is fine. THE FOLLOWING WAS COPIED/PASTED FROM THE INTERNET ABOUT THE USS ESSEX. The construction of the U. Essex was authorized by President Abraham Lincoln shortly before he was assassinated but it was delayed for several years. The decaying condition of the navy eventually resulted in a special Congressional act, approved February 10, 1873, authorizing the Secretary of the Navy to construct eight war vessels, the aggregate tonnage of the whole not to exceed eight thousand tons. Adams and Essex were awarded to him. Under the same form of dual superintendence, as in the case of the Adams, the wooden screw steamer Essex, possessing exactly the same dimensions and tonnage, was built by Donald McKay at the Kitter Navy Yard. The Essex’s keel was laid in 1874 and the contract for its machinery was secured by the Atlantic Works. The Detroit Free Press, Nov. 22, 1930, reported the Essex was commissioned in Boston on Oct. 3, 1876, and entrusted to the command of Winfield Scott Schley of Spanish War fame. It was assigned shortly afterward to the North Atlantic Station. It sailed on the Pacific Station from Nov. 1882 and thence on the Asiatic Station for two years during which it took on board Captain S. Morrison and crew members of the shipwrecked Ranier. It was placed out of commission at the New York Navy Yard, Jan. It visited Ponapai, East Carolina Group, in Oct. 1886, to investigate a reported massacre of Spaniards and afforded protection to American missionaries. The Essex left the Asiatic Station in Jan. 1889, returning to United States via the Suez Canal and on May 11th of the same year was placed out of commission at the New York Navy Yard. The Essex was recommissioned on April 22, 1890, and from June 30 to July 8, it took part in the Reunion Ceremonies of the Army of Potomac at Portland, Maine. Afterwards it served on the South Atlantic Station from Oct. It was stationed at Annapolis with cadets on board for instruction in April, 1893, and again went out of commission at Navy Yard, Norfolk, Virginia, June 13, 1893. The Essex was again recommissioned Jan. It was recommissioned Sep. 29th, 1898, and continued in training service until placed out of commission at Navy Yard, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Dec. Please see pics and message me with any questions. I CANNOT CHANGE IT OR REMOVE THE OPTION. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Transportation\Boats & Ships\Military\Photographs”.
